Dunn & Gates take a slim title lead at Spa

Sportscar pairing Barry Gates & Anthony Dunn took the lead of the Radical SR3 Enduro championship by just one point from Team RPM team mates Phil Bailey & Bradley Ellis this weekend at Spa Francorchamps.

The event started well as they qualified 2nd in class for both weekend’s races. In the first race on Sunday Barry made a strong start to make a challenge for the class lead on the opening lap but a spin at Stavelot on damp kerbs dropped him towards the tail of the pack. He fought his way back through and handed the car to Anthony in 4th place in class at mid distance. Anthony then picked off the remaining class rivals to take their third win of the year.

In the second race Gates made no mistakes and ran very strongly, handing the car over to Dunn in 3rd place. Shortly thereafter Anthony took the class lead from Phil Ellis and pulled out a gap. With a 30 second lead and only 5 mins remaining, they looked set for another win, but a rear hub failure took him out of the race. Luckily however, the pair were still classified in 4th place giving them valuable championship points.

The pair also competed in the Britsports 4 hour race on the Saturday evening, sharing a Norma together with Anthony’s partner and 2006 European Formula Atlantic Champion Amanda Whitaker. The trio were on the pace, topping the timing sheets outright in practice and qualifying 3rd overall. Barry started the race & had a good early battle with experienced Britsports frontrunner Edward Lovett’s Norma.

He got the better of the other car although it was short lived as an error on the exit of Blanchimont led to contact with the barrier and although Barry walked away unscathed, the car was badly damaged.

“Although we had a few ups & downs, all in all it was a good weekend – Barry showed a lot of pace and to come away with the Radical championship lead is great" said Anthony.

They race again in the Radical at Thruxton in a month’s time.
