Anthony & Barry finally took a victory in the SPEED series (formerly VdeV UK) at their favourite track, Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps.
Barry took his turn to qualify the Ligier JS49 and outlined his continuing improvements by qualifying in an outstanding 3rd position, just 1 second away from Pole Position and ahead of many professional drivers including Le Mans driver & team mate Phil Bennett and regular pace setter Rob Garofall. An impressive acheivement considering it still being only his third full season in racing.
Anthony took the lead of the race from Simon Dolan's Ligier at the first corner and pulled out a lead of nearly 1 minute after driving a full stint of 1 hour 45 mins of the 3 hour event.
Barry then took over and maintained a big gap, despite Rob Garofall closing down his lead initially. Garofall ran out of fuel in his Juno and coasted into the pit lane with nearly 30 minutes to go, giving Barry a lead of over 3 minutes to his next nearest competitor, Lee Atkins Juno.
A late fuel stop was made by RLR for Barry and such was their efficiency that they cruised home to over a 2 minute victory over Garofall who had fought his way back past Atkins up to 2nd.
"I managed the tyres at the start because it was a hot day, so I didn't romp away at first, but once I started lapping the traffic later in the race, it paid dividends and I could pull out the gap" said Anthony.
"We weren't 100% sure if we could do the race on one fuel stop or not, but it soon became clear that we and the rest of the field for that matter - had no choice because of the length of Spa's straights & the time we are on full throttle for.".
"I'd like to thank the team for working so hard over the weekend - it's a long overdue win for all of us!".
